Jisc extends presence in London’s prestigious Here East site

17th May 2017 – Jisc, the digital solutions provider for the UK’s higher and further education sectors, is today announcing an extension of its network with a new point-of-presence (POP) to further high profile academic and research organisations.

Loughborough University and University College London are already seeing the benefits of the direct connection provided by Jisc to the core of the Janet network, the UK’s high-capacity education and research network.

The point of presence is hosted in the Infinity Data Centre at Here East. The data centre and its clients benefit from extremely high levels of connectivity and power resilience originally installed at the site for the 2012 London Olympic Games

Given the power density and connectivity at Here East as a technology, media and digital hub, the data centre is highly suited to high density, high performance computing platforms or large scale cloud providers. As one of the largest and most efficient data centres in Europe, it has 10,400m2 of technical space and 21MW of highly resistant net IT capacity expandable to 40MW. The data centre also offers carrier-neutral connectivity, offering BT Openreach fibre from three different exchanges, and several major carriers with fibre to the site and high-capacity, diverse-duct routes.

Jeremy Sharp, director strategic technologies, Jisc says, “London is leading the UK’s thriving digital sector, with inner London alone accounting for more than a quarter of the nation’s digital companies. Colleges and universities rightly want to harness the opportunities that working closely with these organisations brings, supporting the development of talent, research and digital enterprise.

Here East and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park looks set to be the beating heart of London’s digital future. Education organisations who establish operations here can be assured that they are at the forefront of digital innovation, all underpinned by the Janet network, which gives them reliable, secure internet connectivity.”

John Hall, Infinity’s sales and marketing director, says, “Jisc’s continued commitment to help the progression of the education and research sectors, places the UK at the forefront of academic research in technology and collaboration, its truly inspiring. The partnership with Infinity Here East will build and create an environment for this work to flourish.”
