Is your business prepared for the future?

Posted by on February 28, 2017

Whilst technology continues to evolve, one thing is for sure, mobile technology is here to stay.

This has been typified by the fact that this week around 100,000 people have flocked to Barcelona to mix with the great and the good at Mobile World Conference 2017.

We now all have multiple mobile devices seemingly welded to our person at all times. From smartphones, laptops and tablets to streaming sticks, wearables and consoles, the average person now has 3.64 such connected devices[1].

However, with smartphones reaching close to saturation point in the developed world, the amount of connected devices will now be primarily driven by the wider Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT has been garnering quite a lot of press coverage recently, and for good reason. A report from Cisco[2] predicts that the IoT will grow faster than any other category of connected devices, leading to the number of machine-to-machine (M2M) connections growing nearly 2.5-fold, from 4.9 billion in 2015 to 12.2 billion in 2020. This will lead to M2M connections representing nearly half (46 percent) of total connected devices by the end of the decade.

With all of these billions of additional connections expected, there will be a greater and greater number of end points within a modern business and more and more data being transported than ever before. Therefore, it will become more imperative than ever that businesses have resilient and scalable infrastructure in place to handle it effectively.

Business books are full of the phrase ‘agility’ now for good reason. Consumers have never been more agile, with constantly morphing tastes and desires. This has meant that businesses need to follow suit. But this doesn’t simply mean changing your marketing message each time consumer demand shifts to the latest shiny thing, it needs to be far deeper reaching than that and link back to having a modern and scalable data centre at your core.
